Frequently Asked Questions

What is an FTP or Suitability Panel hearing?

This is a formal hearing arranged by the University to assess your fitness to practise in your chosen profession.  It is also, sometimes, called a Suitability Panel hearing.

Where do I find the rules for an FTP hearing?

All universities must have rules/regulations/procedures that govern a formal fitness to practise hearing.  You should ask the School administrator in writing for the written procedures or alternatively check the universities website or intranet where they should be readily available.

Can a university make up the rules of the FTP?

No.  The university must have rules that are already applicable on the day you started your course.  It is unlawful to make the rules up as the process unfolds.

Can I have legal representation at an FTP?

It depends on the procedures of the university.  Sometimes the paragraph that governs representation at the hearing can be vague and will leave it open to argument.  However, importantly, at the last stage of any appeal to an FTP decision, there are strong arguments to make that the student should be represented because of the potentially life altering consequences that can occur due to a decision of the FTP.

Does I have to tell my regulatory body if I have been subjected to an FTP process?

Yes.  You must always be transparent about this because in all regulated professions, honesty, probity and transparency are paramount.  You should tell your regulatory body when you apply to register with them.  If they ask you before, you must disclose it.
